In our society, we often guard our free time very jealously. However, many people have helped me grow as a Christian by being very generous with their time. As a teenager and young adult, there were Sunday school teachers, small group leaders and mentors who would take the time to let me know I was created by God and that I was special to them. In fact, Christians who are generous with their time are still very important in my life!
Because those precious moments of validation and learning are so special to me, I try to give of my own time to others. I admit I don’t give my time very freely. I tend to be an introverted person, so sharing my time is not always easy. Sometimes I would rather be by myself. However, the personal time I give back to God ends up helping me grow deeper with Him. For instance, the Tuesday evenings I’ve spent with the Senior High student group have helped me discover the ways I’m best suited to serve God. God blesses me when I give my time back to Him.
“Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil.” Ephesians 5:15-16 NIV
