In 1987 my husband and I were attending church but not faithful in our commitment. George, our church elder wanted to meet with us. We kept putting him off thinking he would try to tell us things we did not want to hear. Over time George backed off.
Then my brother was diagnosed with terminal cancer. He was dying. This was very hard. Everything was happening so fast. During this time George started knocking on our door again. With our defenses down we let him in. Talking to him we realized he did not come to force church on us. He came to express his concern and to pray for us. This was very comforting.
George continued to stay close to us. When my brother passed away he came to the hospital and prayed with us. George was at the funeral (not officiating), but just having him there gave us great comfort.
George made room for God by being there for us, showing us compassion, kindness and supporting us in our time of need.
“But the fruit of the spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness.” Galatians 5:22 NIV
